Dr. Chieh-Lin Stanley Wu Invited to Share on “Age-Related Changes in Visual Function and Vision Care for Older Adults”
On August 6, 2026, Dr. Chieh-Lin Stanley Wu was invited by the HiHOPE team at National Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin Branch to deliver a presentation at the National Center for Geriatrics and Welfare Research, National Health Research Institutes (NHRI).
His presentation, entitled “Age-Related Changes in Visual Function and Vision Care for Older Adults,” focused on the importance of comprehensive vision care, functional vision assessment, and vision rehabilitation in supporting healthy ageing. The session also provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives with Dr. Chen-Yu Wang, Principal Investigator at the National Center for Geriatrics and Welfare Research, and the geriatric research team led by Dr. Kai-Chieh Chang of National Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin Branch.
As people age, normal ageing processes, ocular conditions, neurological disorders, and systemic diseases may lead to changes in vision and visual function. Beyond reduced visual acuity, changes in contrast sensitivity, binocular vision, eye movements, and visuospatial processing may also affect reading, mobility, balance, activities of daily living, and functional independence.
For this reason, vision care for older adults should extend beyond simply helping them “see clearly.” It should also consider how effectively an individual can use vision to perform everyday activities. Appropriate functional vision assessment, optical and environmental modifications, assistive devices, and vision rehabilitation may help older adults maintain daily functioning and quality of life.
Vision care for older adults also relies on interdisciplinary collaboration, involving physicians, nurses, optometrists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, case managers, social workers, caregivers, and family members. Through coordinated assessment, referral, and intervention across disciplines, a more comprehensive approach to vision care and support can be provided, addressing not only ocular health and visual function but also their impact on everyday activities and functional independence.
At East Asia Optometry and Taiwan Optometry Clinical Centre, Dr. Wu and our optometrists have maintained a long-term commitment to vision care for older adults. Our team regularly participates in community- and institution-based vision health education and functional vision services and contributes to community WHO ICOPE (Integrated Care for Older People) intrinsic capacity screening programs organised by National Taiwan University Hospital Yunlin Branch.
We remain committed to integrating clinical optometric care with healthy ageing initiatives and interdisciplinary practice—helping older adults not only see more clearly, but also maintain function, independence, and quality of life as they age.
